Dr. sc. Marina Malinovec Puček, an expert from the Energy Efficiency Department at the Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar (EIHP), shared practical advice with N1 Croatia.

One undeniable fact that deserves to be emphasized time and again is that significant reductions in energy costs for space heating are primarily achieved by minimizing heat losses through the building envelope, which separates heated indoor spaces from the external environment (outdoor air, roof, and ground). After all, buildings need a winter coat just as much as we do.

However, even without major investments, households can lower their heating bills by using their heating systems efficiently, avoiding overheating, and adopting proper ventilation habits. Among the most common mistakes that increase heating energy consumption, Malinovec Puček highlights leaving windows tilted open for extended periods, maintaining excessively high indoor temperatures, failing to adjust heating to the actual needs of household members, blocking radiators with furniture or curtains, and neglecting heating system maintenance.

Leaving windows tilted open for long periods increases heat losses due to the continuous inflow of cold air. If a radiator is equipped with a thermostatic valve, cold air may lower the temperature detected by its sensor, causing the valve to open and increase the flow of hot water through the radiator. "Just 1°C of overheating results in a 5–7% increase in energy consumption," warned Malinovec Puček. She also emphasized that indoor temperatures should be adjusted according to the purpose of each room and how frequently it is used, rather than heating all rooms to the same temperature regardless of household needs.

For more tips, read the full article on N1 Croatia: https://n1info.hr/vijesti/zbog-ovih-pogresaka-racuni-za-grijanje-mogu-biti-veci-strucnjakinja-za-n1-dala-tri-savjeta-kako-ih-smanjiti/

Kako smanjiti troškove grijanja tijekom zime, izbjeći nepotrebnu potrošnju energije i postići ugodnu temperaturu u domu, za N1 Hrvatska objasnila je dr. sc.
