Radio show 'Climate challenge': Director of EIHP on the Croatian path towards climate neutrality

The guest on the' Climate Challenge' radio show aired on June 5, 2024, on the First Program of Croatian Radio, was the director of EIHP, Dražen Jakšić. In addition to shedding light on the Croatian path towards climate neutrality, the current situation, goals, and challenges, he shared his personal journey and the role he plays in the Institute. He also introduced the audience to the various activities and projects undertaken by the Institute, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

At the beginning, the director of the EIHP presented the content of his lecture "Mitigation of climate change - Croatia on the road to climate neutrality", held at the end of March at a ceremony where the State Hydrometeorological Institute marked the World Hydrometeorological Day. Climate neutrality, which Croatia and other countries have committed to by 2050, does not mean a complete cessation of greenhouse gas emissions by that year, but their balancing: releasing only as many emissions as can be absorbed.

The basis for mitigating emissions is the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) for the Republic of Croatia, which currently refers to the period until 2030 when emissions must be reduced by 55 percent compared to 1990. The first such plan was issued in 2019, and its updating is in progress due to new world circumstances and the awareness of the need to speed up action.
