Croatia has an enormous but unused geothermal potential. But that should change soon. The Agency for Hydrocarbons and the Crosco company signed a contract worth almost 40 million euros, which will begin the search for hot water in Velika Gorica, Zaprešić, Osijek and Vinkovci. If the drilling bears fruit, these cities should already be heated by the springs on which they lie in a few years.
Dražen Jakšić, director of the Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar, spoke about this topic in HTV's Dnevnik (television news), broadcast on Saturday, June 8, 2024. He pointed out that Croatia has excellent geothermal potential in the continental part. He emphasized that the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan by 2030 foresees more than 300 MW of installed power in geothermal power plants. "That would represent about 15% of our total consumption in 2030. It is quite a demanding and challenging goal, but it is also possible considering our potential and the interest of investors", he asserted.
