Director of the Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar Appears on N1 with Tihomir Ladišić

Dražen Jakšić, Director of the Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar, appeared on N1's programme on 25 June, hosted by Tihomir Ladišić, where he discussed electricity supply and the resilience of Croatia's power system during the intense heatwave affecting the country.

During heatwaves, Croatia ranks among the highest electricity consumers in Europe. "We rank fourth in Europe in terms of increased electricity consumption during heatwaves. Ahead of us are Greece, Montenegro and Türkiye, followed by Italy and Spain. Southern European countries are the most exposed to extreme heat. However, unlike those countries, Croatia has a smaller share of industrial electricity consumption, so households account for a larger share of demand. During heatwaves, our peak electricity demand increases by around 18%," said Jakšić.

Despite increased demand, Croatia has a sufficient electricity supply, and the power system remains stable. "We are in a very good position. Our power system is secure and stable. The only potential disruption could occur if, after this heatwave, severe storms and strong winds are forecast to hit later this week, causing damage to electricity infrastructure. That is impossible to predict. Under normal operating conditions, however, our system remains stable despite the higher electricity consumption," Jakšić emphasised.
